Q:
Dear Barbara,
I recently applied for a job well in advance of the job posting deadline. A few days after I sent the resume, I was looking at the cover letter and noticed that I had forgotten the period at the end of a sentence. Ouch!
Since the deadline was still two weeks out, I sent a new cover letter, resume and online job application that was required of the position. I sent a small letter explaining my mistake. I also tightened up my cover letter the second time.
Here's the kicker: This was for a communications/editor position. I said good writers are always looking for ways to improve their presentation. I haven't heard back because the application deadline is this Friday (July 6). I believe correcting this mistake and applying a second time showed my professionalism. Some people said, it was just a small mistake and if I was qualified, they'll overlook it. I think that's wrong. I know in the world of cover letters and resumes, there is no such thing as a small mistake.
Did I do the right thing? I am losing sleep over this whole thing because this is my dream job.
Thanks,
Bill

Hi Bill,
In my opinion, it could do either way depending on who reads and reacts to your cover letter. I hope they would be more impressed with your content, qualifications, and creativity. I think you did the right thing. It indicates that you found the omission and shows attention to detail and tact. Now, give them a call in a week, if you can, and let them know that you are very interested in the position and want to inquire about their timeline for reviewing applications and filling the position. Good luck and thank you for your inquiry! Let me know if it works out!
